Yona of the Dawn (#4)
Reviews may contain information that could be considered 'spoilers'. Readers should proceed at their own risk. Yona of the Dawn Vol. Gija sees Yona as the Crimson Dragon King. She protests but will seek out the help of the dragons. Now they are searching for the Blue Dragon, who is quite elusive and feared by his village as "cursed". I love that this volume opens with Hak and Gija fighting to protect Yona from bandits. They both get to show off a little, which earns the respect of the other -- Hak for being as strong as he is while injured , and Gija for his fierceness despite his sheltered upbrining.
We also get to see him use his dragon hand, which hints at the overall power of the dragons. I like Hak's perspective on Yona's midnight training to strengthen herself. It's a good attitude that some shojo titles are really starting to pick up on -- the male protectors wanting to protect the weaker female in their charge but not looking down on her or begrudging her striving to get stronger. Gija even empathizes with her desire to be useful!
It helps balance things out that Yun is not a fighter and uses his mind to contribute which is much needed in this group. The Blue Dragon is fantastic! I love that this volume spends a large amount of time on his upbringing by the former Blue Dragon, including that Blue Dragon's outlook on life and how the villagers perceive them. This Blue Dragon uses his power once when he was four years old, killing an army and cementing the villager's fear of him.
The mask he wears is a great visual as well as a plot device. I love that he has a squirrel friend, who instantly bonds with Yona. The earring-eating scene is so cute! It's so sad to see how the villagers treat him.
Their fear is somewhat warranted, but it's also a matter of perspective. As such, I appreciate Giga scolding them, though after generations of fear it won't do any good. The Blue Dragon is so strong with his power yet also so weak alone and self-hating , which makes him complex and interesting in different ways than the other characters.
His interactions with Yona show us how much she's grown and matured as well. I also love Hak's reactions to being asked to stay behind as Yona is trying not to depend too much on him, wanting to free him of his obligation and to his thinking she's trapped after a cave in showing us that he cares for her beyond his obligation. I'm definitely beginning to ship Hak and Yona more. An excellent volume. The dragon angle has made me much more interested in this story.
And the reaction of the Blue Dragon to touching Yona gives me hope that even though she doesn't see herself as the Crimson Dragon King, she actually is and will become strong in many complex ways to embody that!

After gathering together, they travel through Kohka to help its citizens wherever they can. Later in the story, the rumor of the return of King Hiryuu and the Four Dragon spreads once more. Yona is the 16 year-old daughter of Kohka's King Il, known for her unusual and beautiful red hair. She later resolves to travel the country and solve the problems that had arisen during her father's terrible reign. Hak is the childhood friend and personal bodyguard of Yona. As the strongest man of the Wind Tribe, known as "The Thunder Beast", he became their general and tribe chief, but he gives up this title when he is branded a traitor by Su-Won and accompanies Yona to find the four dragons. He is secretly in love with Yona, but respectfully keeps his distance. Yun is a brilliant and intellectually curious pretty boy, who originally came from a poor village in the lands of the Fire Tribe and now lives with the priest, Ik-Su.

If part one of Yona of the Dawn 's anime adaptation was about Yona's journey from pampered princess to a young woman who could survive in the world, part two is about her realization of what she wants to do in that world as she gathers her dragon warriors. Not that either Gija nor the Blue Dragon soon named Sinha by Yona care what she's up to — both just want to be with her, albeit for slightly different reasons. It's interesting to note that Hak only appears to see Gija as a romantic rival. But Yona herself needs to have a purpose.
